Camelina Apple Pie NatrixOne™ Treats

Camelina Apple Pie NatrixOne™ Treats

Owning a dog is “as American as Apple Pie”, which is why this food deserves its own day. May 13 is National Apple Pie Day, a dessert that has been a national symbol for many years. Thats why at NatrixOne we have transformed this comfort food enjoyed with friends and fur family into a delectable dog bone. There is also nothing like the smell of freshly baked apple pie dog treats. So today, get baking, let the drool hang, and if you are a dog be sure to thank your human!

History of National Apple Pie Day

There is no record of when National Apple Pie Day was created, or who created it. Like many other food holidays, it likely grew from a shared appreciation for this classic dessert. However, apple pie has a long and interesting history. Funnily enough, the apple pie was not invented in America.

The apple pie was originally invented in England, and the earliest apple pie recipe dates all the way back to 1381. The original recipe is very similar to the one we currently know, but it also included figs, raisins, pears, and saffron. The Dutch also created their own version of the apple pie, and the first recipe was published in a 1514 cookbook. This recipe is very similar to the apple pie we know and love today.

It was the English and Dutch settlers that brought apple pie into the colonies of what would become the United States, during the 17th and 18th centuries. They had to wait until the apple trees they planted grew and bore fruit, and initially, apples were mainly used to make cider. It was only in the 18th century that the first apple pie recipes were printed in America, and the dessert quickly grew in popularity.

Americans loved apple pie so much, that in the 19th and 20th centuries it became a symbol of prosperity and national pride, and known as something that is “typically American”. During World War II, when asked why they were going to fight in the war, American soldiers would famously reply “for Mom and for apple pie”. Today, apple pie is still the favorite one amongst the majority of Americans.

How To Bake Camelina Apple Pie NatrixOne Treats

To make your own low-carb dog cookies enriched with Omegas and polynutrients, first measure and mix together the dry ingredients. Next, add water or milk as needed for desired consistency then mix until evenly combined (you may not need all of it). Using wet hands will help form a smooth ball of dough which you can roll out on wax paper to fit whatever size pan that is being used–it should be about 1/2 inch thick crowned with butter if using USDA guidance but only settled enough so there are no air bubbles when cutting into pieces before baking at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup Oat or Rice Flour, any works. We stay clear of wheat flour and wheat can be an inflammatory for dogs.
  • 1 large or 2 small organic apples, shredded
  • ½ tsp or 1 pump NatrixOne Camelina Oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Shred your apple in a food processor and mash it until smooth.
  2. Measure and pour in your flour, adding half at a time. Mix until evenly combined and add the remaining half.
  3. Add one pump of NatrixOne camelina oil.
  4. Fold together until combined. Use your hands as needed to form a solid ball of dough.
  5. Chill the dough for 20 minutes*. Optional, but it helps firm the dough more.
  6. Remove the dough from the fridge and place on parchment paper or a well floured counter.
  7. Preheat your oven to 325 F.
  8. Place your dough into your favorite treat mold. We prefer this silcone bone shaped mold from Amazon.
  9. Bake for 10-15  minutes or until golden.
  10. Remove and let completely cool before transferring to an air-tight container.
  11. Give to your dog as desired! (They’re people safe too!
  12. Don’t forget the scoop of ice cream or some cream to go with your pie, and to share a photo of your delicious Camelina Apple Pie NatrixOne Treats on social media with the hashtag #NatrixOne.
